About This Course

This practical course, intended for 1st year ST students, introduces the core experimental techniques of analytical chemistry and thermodynamics. There are four interconnected lab sessions. each one is addressed

through teaching sequences that allow the assimilation of the intended concepts. Each unit
includes learning activities where these concepts are applied and ends with assessment tests.

The practical course begins with the determination of the calorimetric capacity of a calorimeter (Ccal), followed by the determination of its specific heat capacity, introducing students to the quantification of heat exchange. Students then perform acid-base titrations of strong and weak acids using a strong base to master volumetric analysis, neutralization stoichiometry, and concentration determination.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Use laboratory glassware (burets, pipettes) and digital temperature sensors appropriately.
  • Perform stoichiometric calculations for neutralization and redox reactions.
  • Apply energy-balance equations to experimental data.
  • Interpret experimental indicators and thermal signatures to identify, quantify, and characterize unknown chemical species.

Requirements

Before starting this module, students should have understood the fundamental concepts of acid–base titrations, and redox reactions acquired in high school. In particular, students are expected to be able to:

  • Explain the basic concepts of acid–base and redox reactions.
  • Understand the general principles of volumetric titration.
  • Perform basic stoichiometric calculations related to chemical reactions.
  • Use standard laboratory glassware and follow basic laboratory safety practices.
